INTRO TO ASTRO

A photography workshop focused on capturing the night sky. We will start-off with a short classroom style introduction of camera gear, techniques and the process of planning and creating an image. After which we will head out, put theory to practice and focus on the night sky. Fingers crossed for clear skies!

Workshop Details

Jasper National Park is the perfect place to bring your landscape photography to the next level. Our workshops are tailored to novice and intermediate photographers, and are designed to improve your images and to expand your knowledge of photography. All with the Canadian Rockies as backdrop.

  • Workshops are limited to a maximum of 4 participants per instructor, to ensure participants receive sufficient personal attention and effective feedback.

  • Transportation is not included. We will arrange transportation with the group at the start of the workshop, carpooling is strongly encouraged.

  • Registration is confirmed upon full payment. Location details and a rough itinerary will be forwarded by email.

  • Workshops spots are non-refundable, but are transferable to a new participant (full refund, minus $50 admin fee). We keep a wait list, but a transfer is never guaranteed.

We acknowledge that Jasper National Park is located in Treaty 6 and 8, and the traditional lands of the Anishinabe, Aseniwuche Winewak, Dene-zaa, Nêhiyawak, Secweìpemc, Stoney Nakoda, Mountain Métis and Métis.

It is a privilege to explore and photograph these traditional, ancestral and rightful lands.

Skill Level

Our workshops are tailored to novice and intermediate photographers, and are suitable to anyone with a digital camera (DSLR or mirrorless) with manual control of shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings.

Physical Abilities

Generally speaking a photography workshop will include roadside locations and short hikes (>1 KM) on well-defined trails with slight elevation changes and uneven terrain.

Weather

The weather patterns in the Canadian Rockies are fickle and hard to forecast accurately. Moody days might not make for the best views, but besides grand mountain vistas we can photograph canyons, lakes, waterfalls, glaciers, wildlife, trees, etc.

Workshops will run in adverse weather, unless a Public Alert has been published by Environment Canada. In that case, a full refund, minus $50 admin fee, will be provided.

Gear

  • DSLR/Mirrorless camera

  • Lenses; recommended minimum of a wide-angle (<16mm) and a telephoto zoom lens (>200mm). For night photography a lens with wide aperture (F2.8 or lower) is strongly recommended.

  • Accessories; lens cloth, cable release/intervalometer, L-bracket, etc
